Purpose: The GU Veteran Ally Program is a visible network of veteran support made up of faculty, staff, and administrators educated about issues concerning veterans and committed to creating a welcoming and open environment for student-veterans and military service members on campus.

Program Description: The GU VET Ally Seminar is a half-day event which raises awareness of the needs and concerns of military service members and veterans studying at GU. The program will include: an introduction and mission overview; a brief review of military cultures, customs, and experiences; “Why I Joined,” a story of service and transition from a current GU student-veteran; a discussion of what veterans bring to the classroom; approaches to teaching student-veterans; and, a student-veteran panel that will discuss their military experience and transition to the university.  During breaks, participants will have the opportunity to interact with student-veterans, part of which may include handling displayed military equipment (helmet, rucksack, etc.), to better understand veterans’ experiences.  At the conclusion of the seminar, participants will receive a handbook that reviews the resources available to student-veterans, and a decal to display and show their status as “GU VET Allies”. 

Program Objectives:

- further promote GU’s goal of a student-centered learning environment through a visible network of allies committed to serving the needs of student-veterans,

- educate staff, faculty, and administrators on the contributions and concerns that veterans and service-members bring to the classroom,

- furnish an opportunity for the Georgetown community to demonstrate support for service members and veterans,

- advance the university‘s progress towards a campus that discourages discrimination, encourages intellectual openness, and celebrates diversity and inclusiveness.
